The Silent Giant's Long Journey

A sword coated with deific light clashed with a sword covered by ice. A blank face and helm-covered sentry faced down the forest elves' stoic Glarick.

They broke apart but then met when each stepped in again. Their swords clashed some more, each quick hit releasing a swoosh and a clack.

After the team had moved on ahead, Glarick tried to keep the sentry down with ice, but she had escaped. She had also cast the barrier that Auroro had previously faced, the one infused with deific mana.

On their umpteenth slash, Glarick narrowed his eyes at his ice-coated sword. Something was strange. Glarick prided himself on the ice spells he tinkered and experimented with to make his own variant ice—his own signature augmented element, steeled ice. Decades of intense study and reverence of the ice element gave him access to revelations that allowed for the generation of this augmented ice that he knew had the edge over the ice that most casual casters used.

But despite wielding augmented ice, with every clash against the sentry's own light-coated blade, he could feel his ice crack. His sword's ice seemed to be breaking more quickly.

That coating magic doesn't seem all that powerful. You, yourself, never bothered learning magic greater than B-Grade, Glarick thought as he deflected three more slashes. Might it be the nature of the deific mana? Thanks to Auroro, we know that deific mana does have some sort of elemental relationship.

Glarick stomped his foot down when the sentry stepped back. A small pillar of earth rose right where her foot landed, knocking her slightly off balance.

Another clang of metal and swoosh of magic rang out. The sentry, with shaking arms, was holding her sword up against the icy blade Glarick brought down on her.

Auroro's element, that black lust-sin, is one that I would have thought to be a concept rather than an actual element... But if concepts matter and are, in fact, elements for the purposes of interactions with deific mana, then perhaps when fighting deific mana, concepts dictate the rules.

Glarick looked at where he imagined the scarred sentry’s eyes would be, and his stoic expression turned pained for a second before he began casting magic on his sword.

If concepts dictate the rules, then it's likely mortal mana is fundamentally weak against deific mana so as to observe the difference between the two positions. In that case, I won't be able to break the barrier efficiently unless I get more creative with using the natural earth.

As their blades rattled against each other, the magic circle Glarick drew on his sword's hilt flashed, and the spell activated. Ice spread from his sword to the light-covered blade, and his hands radiated cold.

The sentry's nose crinkled—enough was enough. From her body, gales erupted, pushing Glarick away as blades of violent wind slammed into his fortification.

Glarick wasn't nimble. He took the hits, slashing at the blades of wind when he could. All the while, he wore a pained expression, but not because he was hurt.
